The MBG's Madagascar program has four components :
- Research on hundreds of plant species (most endemic) and a catalog of all the vascular plants of Madagascar
- Training at the graduate and undergraduate level, as well as professional studies
- Conservation of the rapidly disappearing forests and other habitats
- Advocacy for sustainable alternatives to the causes of deforestation and for the Malagasy whose livelihoods are dependent on the sustainable use of the natural resources
