Kufuor Foundation in partnership with NYCOB Enterprise Consortium has initiated the Biodiversity Ecosystems and Natural Capital Investment (BENCI) programme as part of efforts to reduce the loss of biological diversity in Ghana and the West Africa Sub Region through a market-based approach.

Some of such actions to be taken under this programme include promoting biodiversity business and climate smart agricultural practices, growing more trees to sequester carbon emissions, protecting water bodies and ecosystems etc.

The “Biodiversity Ecosystems and Natural Capital Investment” (BENCI) programme is a five-year green investment programme that will mobilize private investments and grants for the growth of biodiversity-based rural enterprises and promotion of innovative green ventures in Ghana and the West African Sub-Region.

The BENCI programme consists of two high points;

Firstly, the annual BENCI forum and exhibition which will be organized annually on 3-4 march to coincide with the Africa environment day. Activities of the forum will include lectures, panel discussions, evaluating progress, celebrating successes and showcasing the region’s indigenous green enterprising initiatives that address climate change.

Secondly, the Biodiversity Enterprise Fund (BEF): this green investment fund will provide grant support to rural biodiversity enterprises i.e. Nature-based profitable ventures that contribute to conservation. Some of these enterprises include apiculture, heliculture, mushroom farming, organic vegetable farming, floriculture, bio prospecting (research into plant medicine), watershed protection, ecotourism, craft making, biodiversity offsetting, biodiversity management and accounting services etc.

The BENCI programme is initiated against the backdrop of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011 -2020) which serves to support and promote implementation of the objectives in the global strategic plan for biodiversity with the goal of significantly reducing biodiversity loss.
