Ghana's National Planning Committee for the celebration of Environmental Events, has recommended that the 2009 celebration be held at Ofinso in the Ashanti Region. The decision to observe the event at Ofinso was based on the global theme chosen by the Secretariat of the Convention on biological Diversity:- "Invasive Alien Species (IAS) - one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, and to the ecological and economic well-being of society and the planet".
The Ofinso District of Ghana is under the threat of Pulp Mulbery (broussonetia) which was brought into the country to be used for paper production. Unfortunately, the plant has spread all over the District has thus overtaken the vegetation in the area.
The celebration will be used to educate the people in the control of the plant, which has deprived the local people of benefits of the forest.
