This Conference is on the theme 'Counting on the environment. the contribution of forests to rural livelihoods'
CIFOR-PEN and its partners are also organising a two-day science workshop at the University of East Anglia in Norwich on 13–14 June, the days before the international policy conference in London. The aims of the workshop are to:
• Present and critically review recent research findings on the importance of forest and environmental resources to rural livelihoods and poverty alleviation
• Gather papers from which we can select submissions for a special issue of a high-level international journal
• Identify policy implications to feed into the conference that follows
• Provide a forum to discuss research methods and priorities for future research.
The workshop programme will seek a balance between papers that use the PEN dataset (both case studies and global thematic papers) and papers from other projects. We welcome all types of papers on the topic, but we especially encourage quantitative studies of the forest–poverty interface, investigations into the roles that forest resources have in local livelihoods, and analyses of how local institutions, ecological conditions, market forces and government policies influence this interface.
Researchers are invited to submit a one-page abstract by 1 March 2011.
